I have been working in Microbiology as a healthcare scientist for over 10 years and have a passion for the field.
Healthcare Scientists fulfil a number of different roles, mainly in the NHS. There are nearly 50 specialities, which are split into physiological, physical, Bioinformatics and life sciences. I completed a BSc in Biomedical Science and an MSc in Biomedicine and then subsequently started my on the job training in a large hospital.
From working in a busy lab within the NHS: I then spent some time working in reference labs (where more specialised tests are done) and have even found myself in Sierra Leone, Africa, working alongside others during the Ebola Outbreak.
Currently I’m working in Great Ormond street as a Healthcare scientist within the Microbiology department, testing patient samples for micro-organisms which may be causing an infection and figuring out what antibiotics can be used to make patients better. I’m also working as a Clinical Practice Educator for Healthcare Science supporting the education of the healthcare scientific workforce at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
