I did a degree in Microbiology (by mistake – I started off with zoology but swapped). I then volunteered in Africa in a healthcare centre for a few months. I came back to do a PhD at Sheffield Uni. That took four years, and then I did two years of research afterwards in the same lab. I knew then that I wanted to do more applied research, and teach, and so I applied for and got the job here at the university of south wales. That was eleven years ago. I didn’t do much research for a few years as I had kids and only worked two days a week, but about four years ago I got a research grant and have been researching antibiotic resistance ever since!

I had mostly decided that I wanted to do something related to science by the time I was 16 so I did biology, chemistry and maths for A-level, followed by going to Sheffield university to study molecular biology. I wasn’t really sure what exactly I wanted to do at this point, I wanted to stay in science but I wasn’t sure in what area. I found a PhD that looked interesting so I did that which gave me more time to think about where I wanted my career to go in the long run. I came across the NHS Scientist Training Programme and it really appealed to me so I applied and here I am now!
