No. although the bacteria we work on can make people sick, we make sure we work in special labs to keep us safe. We also make sure we always work carefully to avoid getting sick.

No, we have very strict health and safety rules to stop us getting sick and to stop us spreading the bacteria around to other people too.

No, as the others have said there are a lot of rules to make sure we don’t get sick! In the hospital labs, most people have vaccinations to protect them from common diseases that we could catch from the blood.

No, health and safety is really important when you’re working in a lab to make sure that neither you or anyone around you gets sick. Lab coats, gloves, and goggles aren’t just fashion statements – they’re important protective kit when handling nastier bacteria.

With any job you have there is a level of risk involved. With bacteria, if you don’t follow the health and safety guidance you would put yourself or others at risk. Luckily all the training and experience you gain as you go along makes this very unlikely.

The only sickness I’ve gotten is when someone comes in with a horrendous cold when they should be at home getting better!
