That’s a really interesting question because at my stage it’s not really a commitment to science – a lot of people finish PhDs and decide that they’d like to do something else for a career.

To actually answer it though, there were a lot of things I wanted to do. I left school wanting to be an officer in the merchant navy and so spent a year in college studying engineering before going to uni to do biology

Yes, I wanted to be a cleaning lady when I was 5 years old. Then I wanted to be a surgeon since I was 10. And I wanted to be a journalist and TV presenter for a while… But science is the best!

Yes! I wanted to be an actress then a raft or a safari guide. I definitely ended up being the right thing for me, though.

I wanted to be either a vet or a midwife when I was younger but I eventually decided on science. I’ve still not ‘committed’ to science though, there are lots of non-scientific jobs I can go into after I’ve finished my PhD, which is really exciting!

Yes, I considered a whole variety of things including being an accountant, a writer and even a spy. I think when you’re still at school you don’t need to make any final decisions, just try to find what you enjoy and what you’re good at so you can follow those paths and see where you end up.

Yes, I knew I wanted to do something science as my mum was a nurse and she was the only other science person in the family.

I was either gonna be a marine biologist, a science teacher, a Microbiologist or Dietician.
