Yeah I did, I think when you’re at school it’s hard to get more than a general idea of the area you want to go in to. Even at university I thought I’d be a research scientist at a university or a pharmaceutical company but I ended up working at a hospital instead. The good thing is that even when you choose what degree you want to do you don’t have to be locked into that area forever. Science is really good for developing problem solving, data analysis and even writing and presentation skills which are useful in loads of different jobs so lots of companies like hiring science graduates 🙂
Yeah definitely, I wanted to be a midwife most of the way through high school but changed my mind right at the end. I also didn’t know that I wanted to be a research scientist through college and university and decided that last minute too. Like Greg said, you can change your mind if you find something else you’re interested in. Lots of people study science and even do degrees in science and end up in completely different careers! It’s the different skills you learn from each subject and how you can apply them to your job which is important really.
Yes definitely! I had no intention of being a scientist, even when I went to Uni. I don’t think I really knew what a scientist was. When I was at school I wanted to be an actress, and then I wanted to work with animals. I was never really driven to do one particular thing. I love being a scientist now, though.

It is nice to know that it is possible to change your career mid-way doing something else.
